I think fabric was my first medium. My mother was a seamstress who made most of our costumes, curtains, bedspreads and decor. I was encouraged to create tents and forts with great fabrics in my room and was allowed to paint on my walls. When I was about 13 years old, my mother came to me with a ladder and a stapler, describing to me a room she’d seen where the young artist collaged their ceiling in brightly colored imagery. We created ceiling magic and to this day, ceiling installations continue to be one of my favorite art transformations.
